Starting An Online Home Business
Let’s take a look at starting an online home business. Are you tired of the 9 to 5 grind and a boss who runs you into the ground? Are you tired of working your butt off to make someone else rich? Do you want more time to spend with your family while providing a living for them? Do you like the internet? Then starting an online home business may be just what you need to do.
There are probably more scams on the internet than anyone can imagine. There are websites that offer to make you rich beyond your wildest dreams. So let’s be clear from the start. Running an online home business will require real work. It also requires you to make all the decisions for your business instead of relying on your boss. You also have to make sound business decisions and not waste your money on get rich quick schemes and pie in the sky sales rhetoric.
You’ve probably all read stories of the internet millionaire who started with nothing and became hugely rich. You can do it too if you only buy this e-book, purchase this software or sign up as a member of our exclusive members-only club. Some of these will teach you things you need to know to be successful. Others will simply take your money and in return give you outdated information you can get for free by doing a simple search online. You have to have the ability to see through the hype.
Multi-level marketing was around long before the internet. The mailbox used to crammed full of mailers offering to make you rich if only you sign up people to work under you. Most of these pyramid schemes only made the person at the top money, while everyone else made little or nothing. Well, then along comes the internet and now those same peddlers don’t even have to pay for postage. They just SPAM your email box constantly.
It’s Hard Work
The first thing we need to be clear on is that success in any business takes hard work. If you think you are going to throw up a website and in a few months jet off to some exotic vacation destination and make millions, I have a hard truth for you. It may take months of hard work before you start turning a profit online. But it’s exactly the same with an offline business venture. If you aren’t prepared to put in the hours of work to be successful online then you will fail just as surely as if you opened a store then never showed up to work. There aren’t any shortcuts or magic systems that are going to make you successful if you aren’t willing to see it through.
I’m not trying to discourage anyone from going into business online. I’m simply putting the reality out there that despite all the get rich quick hype you see in those marketing emails, getting rich on the internet will take effort on your part. If you start an online home business with realistic expectations you will be more likely to succeed. If all you want to do is surf the web for cute cat videos and buy stuff online then internet business may not be for you. I don’t mean to sound harsh, but the internet is full of people who want something for nothing, and that think everything online should be free.
Let’s Start Your Online Home Business
Now that you know the harsh realities of starting an online home business, are you ready to get started? Great! Let’s look at what you need to start your business.
You are going to need a domain name and a website. I cover those subjects in a post here. So after you choose what you will be selling those will be your next steps.
When choosing a domain name it is no longer necessary to always choose a .com name. Now there are many other extensions that have more options available and can describe your business to potential customers. When I put my photography business online I discovered the .com version of the name I wanted was not available. However, garydavis.photography WAS available. So look at possible other top-level domain names for your business.
The same is true for web hosting for your website. There are many options available. Don’t just choose the free or cheapest option. You may find that the web host runs ads on your site, or you don’t have the options you need to make your website the way you want. If you don’t know about these things ask someone who knows or look for forums related to web hosting and ask questions.
Now that you have a domain name and web hosting it’s time to get your website. You can buy a template and then enter the content yourself, or you can hire someone to do that work for you. Just be sure if you decide to go the DIY route you have a full understanding of what you need to know to make your site work. It will cost you more, in the long run, to have someone fix your site for you after you mess it up. You may even have to start from scratch, which means you have wasted all the time you put in that could have been better spent on other tasks.
Now that you have your website built and online, you are ready to start promoting your online home business. This is where the rubber meets the road so to speak. This is where the work really starts. Just because you have your site online does not mean anyone will find it among the billions of other websites out there.
You need to promote your website. You have to be willing to put in more hours promoting your site than the next person. And you have to be willing to try new things to beat your competition to new ways to promote your site.
If you were running a blog you will be writing about topics that relate to the products or services you offer. One of the ways to promote your website would be to write addition original articles and submit them to article directories online. Article directories offer free content to website owners. This allows the website owners to offer great content on their site, and it allows you as the writer to add your author block at the end of the article with a link back to your website. Every time an article is published on a website you have a link then pointing back to your website. This is one way to help your search engine ranking. Writing articles is a great way to increase the links back to your site and improve your search engine rankings for your keywords.
Another way to promote your site is to post answers to questions in blogs or forums that are related to your website’s subject. You are allowed to post your link in your signature line that also links back to your website. Just be sure when posting in forums that you actually add to the discussion. SPAMMING a forum with unrelated posts will get you quickly banned.
Be sure and put links to your website in your email signature, on your business card and on your letterhead. Anywhere you can increase exposure for your website is good for promoting its popularity.
Starting an online home business can be just what you are looking for if you want to start your own business. Just make sure you are prepared for the hard work it will take to be successful. If you are, then you will surely join the ranks of those that have found that an online home business is a great way of life.
